While Linkin Park are being hailed as the next big thing in rapcore, rap metal, nu metal, rap rock, or whatever you want to call it, what they may signal is the end of a genre that - especially with the departure of Zack de la Rocha from Rage Against the Machine - is beginning to sound a bit weary. Linkin Park indicate exactly where they’re coming from with their album title, Hybrid Theory, mixing equal parts Deftones-style alternative, Limp Bizkit-style rapcore, and Nine Inch Nails-style brooding industrial machine beats. They do it with expertise and a modicum of thoughtfulness, but as late entrants to an already saturated genre, you’ve got to wonder how far Linkin Park can ride a crashing wave.
